As we all know, Boston is one of the better classic rock bands that have graced our ears. They were most popular in the 1970s and 1980s, but their unique musical talent has kept them alive through the decades. The last album they released was in 2002, more than 11 years ago. That was a long time ago and after the death of their lead singer Brad Delp in 2007, I’m sure none of us could foresee any future releases.
Much to my surprise (and maybe even yours), Boston has released their sixth studio album. Life, Love and Hope was released Dec. 3, 2013. Surprisingly, this album spent an incredibly long ten years in the works.
What’s really cool about this album is they have redone a few old songs and threw some new ones our way. The songs that have been re-arranged and re-mastered, including “Didn’t Mean to Fall in Love” and “Someone (2.0),” are two of the better tracks on this album. Perhaps it’s because Delp is singing, so they have that crisp classic rock sound. You know what, scratch that “perhaps.” That is the exact reason these songs stand out above the other songs with different vocalists.
Boston has always been the boy-band of the classic/hard rock genre, and while Delp was singing, that was just fine. It worked for Boston. However, these new singers seem to be trying too hard to fill Delp’s shoes. Don’t get me wrong, this is a nice album to kick back and relax to, but I had to force myself to listen to the entire 4 minutes of “If You Were in Love.” Just to tell you, it is not worth listening to.This one drags on, the guitar and vocals clash constantly, and the lyrics are just really cheesy. Seriously, just skip this song.
I apologize to the die-hard Boston fans, because you probably won’t agree with me. For those of you that are like me and dig a few of their songs, here and there, just stream it online to get a better feel for it. Life, Love and Hope is an album that should not be an impulsive purchase.
