The trouble started a few weeks into October. Everywhere I'd go: candy, cookies and cake. Then came all the discounts on Halloween candy. If you see a big bag of peanut butter cups for only two dollars, you have got to buy it, right? Then it was Thanksgiving and the wonderful assortment of pies. Up next: Christmas with more candy and even more pies. Mixed in with the chilly weather and early darkness, you have a perfect storm that culminates in lazy days watching Star Trek. I assumed my belt was shrinking, but as it turns out I'm getting kind of chunky.
Read moreCities are change. The built environment is the skeleton of decades of urban experimentation; it is a code that unravels itself the more you know about a place's history, its architecture. Pueblo, as usual, tends to buck even this trend. In 2011, Kiplinger ranked Pueblo as the second cheapest city in America behind Brownsville, Texas (apparently our steaks were a little pricey). The funny thing that strikes me, as a resident of Pueblo, is the lack of change - due in part to cheap living.
Read moreEvery New Year I find my thoughts turning automatically to one thing: change. As potential resolutions dominate my thoughts, what I am really saying is "I need to change;" Change the things I eat, change how much I exercise, exchange certain bad habits for better ones...I need change. So I read books and articles and blog posts about change, and they tell me how many days it takes to form new habits and how to lose 10 pounds fast without lifting a finger. I watch infomercials that promise amazing results in 90 days with smiling, happy people who have already experienced the change that I

Change is upon us every day, but never in the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights has change ever been so abundant and obvious. I am proud and excited to say that when it comes to measurable change, the last decade has been the most progressive in the fight for equality for the LGBT community.

She envisioned The Karmic Konnection, which opened in November, as "an everybody store" a place where people from diverse groups could come to learn, communicate and of course shop.

Read moreLike everything Lisa Musso-Marino takes on, her newest venture on Union Avenue is world class. Musso's Italian Market & Deli, which opened in November of 2011, would feel right at home in a big city. From the hand-painted murals of Italian villas to the antiqued shelves stuffed with local honey and imported olives and vinegars, stepping into the shop is like stepping into an Italian rosticceria. Shoppers can take home fresh Italian breads baked daily at the family's restaurant in Vineland, fresh deli items imported from Italy such as Mortadella and Italian cheeses and locally made products such as pickled peppers and jam. Along with deli and cookie trays, the shop offers salads and sandwiches including the "Mussoletto" a giant muffaletta sandwich filled with Genoa salami, mortadella, ham, olives and several Italian cheeses and of course Musso's home-grown chilies. The market is also an outlet for Musso-Marino's handmade pasta sold under the name Joe-Vito-Bella.
Read moreWhen we talk about '60's counter-culture, The Haight or Woodstock is what usually comes to mind. However, our area should get its due, considering that Drop City, the first rural artist commune established in the mid '60s, was right here in Southern Colorado. An exhibit highlighting some Colorado artists, past and present, that shared similar sensibilities as those '60's hippies, is currently on view at CSU-Pueblo's art gallery. Droppers, Drifters and Anti-Designers, organized by faculty-member, Caroline Peters, is an adventurous introduction to our own hippie history.
