It’s that time of the year again, folks. The holidays are upon us. There’s a nip in the air, eggnog is in your favorite grocers’ freezer, and THAT DAMN MARIAH CAREY SONG IS ON 24/7 IN EVERY STORE I GO TO! If you’re anything like me, working thankless retail jobs for much of my teens and 20’s has ruined holiday music for me. So as a gift to you, here’s a few Holiday songs that don’t make me want to gouge out my eyes with candy canes. Enjoy!
James Brown | “Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto”
On this snappy little number, James Brown breaks down why he was the undisputed Godfather of Soul! Uplifting and socially aware without being preachy, and most importantly funky as hell!
The Ramones | “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Wanna Fight Tonight)”
New York Punk rock legends the Ramones offer up a sweet and slightly sardonic take on big city relationships around the hectic holiday season.
Eels | “Christmas Is Going To The Dogs”
Better known for being alt-pop weird and uber California cool, Eels(Mark Oliver Everett and Co.) throw us a major curveball with this cozy little gem that reminds us that pets are family, no bones about it.
Kurtis Blow | “Christmas Rappin”
If you need a jam to get the dance floor of that Ugly Sweater Party movin’, look no further! A classic hip hop cut that also happens to be the very first hip hop song to be released on a major label!
Low | “Just Like Christmas”
Hailing from the great White North of Duluth, Minnesota, the indie-poppers in Low can tell you a thing or two about snow. And tell you they do on this sleigh bell tinged acoustic number that fits in on pretty much any playlist from November to February!
Fall Out Boy | “Yule Shoot Your Eye Out”
Fall Out Boy has what you need this holiday season, if what you need is in fact a sickly sweet and funny little number that let’s you know that it’s okay to feel broken hearted around the holidays. Not for the faint of heart!
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings | “Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects”
The very epitome of Cool, unrivaled Soul Sister Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings wrapped this present up early for us! A vintage Soul trip to Jam City that manages to say something important and still shake butts. Get into it!
Fitz and the Tantrums | “Santa Stole My Lady”
Los Angeles Neo-Soul rebels Fitz and the Tantrums reimagine the classic “Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” trope with a fun modern angle. Very cute, you guys. Veeerrry cute.
Gents & Jawns | “Turn Up Ye Merry Gentlemen”
The annual boring office X-Mas bash you’re probably required to attend won’t be a lame and stuffy if D.C. area producers Gents & Jawns have their way! Crank up this low and slow trap jam up high, spike the eggnog, and get turnt!
She & Him | “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”
Sure, it may be a cover and a well worn staple of the genre, but the combination of duo M. Ward and the adorkable Zooey Deschanel and a warm and inviting re-boot of a Christmas classic is pretty magical.
The Vandals | “Oi to the World”
If all you want for Christmas is Peace in the pit and a fun and funny punk rock sing-a-long anthem, So Cal punkers the Vandals got you covered! Oi to the world indeed!
