"I've known people who just go to Loaf N' Jug and don't come back," says Puebloan Sergio Serna, a Mexican-born American citizen in his early 40s.

Serna worries about his friends and family in the process of gaining their permanent-resident status. He explains that driving or riding in a car makes them vulnerable to deportation and even a minor traffic violation can alert authorities to their tenuous legal status.
