6 die in police shootings in Colorado in 5 days — but is it a pattern?

DENVER — Six people during the past week have died in officer-involved shootings across Colorado.

The Denver Post reports the number of shootings is high, but law enforcement experts are having a tough time finding patterns in the string of shootings that started on June 30.

Two of the fatal shootings involved stolen vehicles. Four involved chases. In five of the incidents, early reports indicate the people who died were armed or had threatened police.

Colorado has passed laws to ban choke holds and has increased restrictions, oversight and training of law enforcement officers in the wake of local and national allegations of police abuse. But Alamosa County Sheriff Duane Oakes says ultimately, police have a duty to protect the community and its people when somebody points a gun at officers.
